Length, width and height are only the starting point. Load, frame construction, mesh size, mounting method, material and finish determine how the basket will perform and how it should be manufactured.
A custom-made wire basket cannot be specified by length, width and height alone. Two baskets with identical external dimensions may perform completely different jobs: one may be a lightweight product display, while the other has to support a heavier load inside refrigeration equipment.
Before a reliable quotation can be prepared, the basket’s function, support points, expected load, material, finish and operating conditions must be understood. A clear specification speeds up feasibility assessment and reduces the number of changes required during sampling.
Start with the application, not the wire layout
The first question is where and how the basket will be used. A basket fitted to a retail shelf has different requirements from one installed in refrigeration equipment or incorporated into a POS display.
Before defining the structure, clarify:
- What products will the basket hold or display?
- What is the expected load?
- Will it slide, hang, rest on runners or be permanently fixed?
- Does it need to be stackable?
- Will it be frequently removed, carried or cleaned?
- Is product visibility, stable support or unrestricted airflow the main priority?
These answers affect the wire arrangement, frame design, number of reinforcements and the geometry of the mounting points.
Examples of custom wire baskets can differ considerably because they are designed for specific applications rather than selected from a universal catalogue.
Frame, wires and support points

The frame maintains the basket’s geometry and rigidity. Its design should reflect the load, overall size and installation method. Larger baskets may require additional cross wires or reinforcements.
This does not mean that the heaviest possible design is automatically the best. Unnecessary material increases weight and cost without necessarily improving performance.
When a basket must fit existing equipment, tolerances at the contact points are particularly important. For a replacement project, a technical drawing, physical sample or photographs showing the mounting arrangement can provide the necessary reference.
How should mesh size and wire spacing be selected?
Mesh size influences product support, basket weight, visibility and airflow. Closer wire spacing may be required for small or unstable products. A more open structure uses less material and may improve both product presentation and air circulation.
Mesh size should never be selected independently from wire diameter and frame design. The complete structure determines how the basket behaves in use.
A useful specification includes:
- wire spacing or mesh dimensions,
- diameters of the wires forming the basket body,
- frame wire diameter,
- direction of the main load-bearing wires,
- position of additional reinforcements.
If these details are not yet known, describe the application, expected load and required dimensions. This gives the manufacturer a basis for assessing feasibility and proposing a structure that can be checked in a sample.
Mild steel or stainless steel?
Material selection should reflect the operating environment, cleaning method, expected service conditions and intended finish. SHELMO manufactures components from mild steel and stainless steel, including AISI 304.
Mild steel is commonly used when the basket will receive a protective surface finish. Powder coating or another treatment can provide the specified colour and appearance.
AISI 304 stainless steel is considered when corrosion resistance, hygiene or an exposed metallic surface is important.
The description “metal basket” is therefore not sufficient for an accurate quotation. The enquiry should identify the required material or explain the conditions in which the basket will operate.
Which finish is suitable for a wire basket?
The finish protects the surface and affects the appearance of the completed component. Depending on the project, available options include:
- powder coating,
- polyethylene coating,
- zinc plating,
- chrome plating,
- electropolishing of stainless steel.
For powder-coated components, specify the RAL colour and, where relevant, the required gloss level or surface texture.
There is no single coating that is best for every wire basket. A finish suitable for a retail display may not be the optimum solution for a component operating inside refrigeration equipment.
What affects the price of a custom-made wire basket?
| Design decision | Effect on the product and quotation |
|---|---|
| Basket dimensions | Affect material use, rigidity and packaging |
| Wire diameters and quantity | Affect weight, product support and manufacturing time |
| Mesh size | Changes the number of wires, welds and amount of material |
| Frame and reinforcements | Maintain geometry and adapt the basket to the load |
| Hooks, handles and runners | Add operations and must match the equipment |
| Material | Mild steel and AISI 304 require different processes |
| Finish | Coating type, colour and surface requirements affect production |
| Order quantity | Determines how preparation costs are distributed |
| Packaging | Must protect the finish and use transport space efficiently |
The lowest-cost option is not always the one containing the least wire. A structural change may affect stability, fit, durability or packaging. Cost optimisation should therefore be carried out together with a functional assessment.
What information is needed for a quotation?
A technical drawing or physical sample provides the best starting point. If neither is available, an initial assessment can be made from a clear sketch, photographs and a complete set of dimensions.
The enquiry should preferably include:
- length, width and height,
- body wire and frame diameters,
- mesh size or wire spacing,
- locations of hooks, handles and support points,
- material,
- finish and RAL colour,
- required load and method of use,
- stackability requirements,
- initial order quantity and estimated annual volume,
- packaging requirements,
- requested delivery date.
Complete engineering documentation is not always necessary at the initial stage. The supplied information must, however, make the basket’s function and mounting method unambiguous.
Check the design with a sample
For a new project, a sample allows the dimensions, fit, structure, coating and appearance to be checked before series production begins.
It is particularly valuable when the component must work with an existing shelf, refrigeration unit or display.
Sample verification reduces the risk that a small difference in hook position, runner spacing or coating thickness will only become visible after the full batch has been delivered.
Do you need custom-made wire baskets?
Send us a drawing, sample, photograph with a visible scale or a description of the application through the Quick Quote form. We will assess feasibility, identify missing technical information and propose the next step.
For a new solution, we can also prepare a sample for verification before series production.
FAQ
What information is needed to quote a custom wire basket?
The essential information includes dimensions, wire diameters, mesh size, frame design, mounting points, material, finish, quantity and intended use. The starting point can be a drawing, sample, sketch or clear photographs.
Can a wire basket be manufactured from a physical sample?
Yes. A sample helps reproduce the geometry, bearing surfaces and mounting method. The agreed parameters should be verified before series production, preferably using a drawing and a newly manufactured sample.
When should AISI 304 stainless steel be considered?
AISI 304 is considered when corrosion resistance, hygiene or an exposed metallic surface is important. The final choice depends on the operating environment and cleaning method.
Does mesh size affect the price of a wire basket?
Yes. Mesh size affects the number of wires, welds and amount of material. It must still be selected together with the load, wire diameter and required product support.
Can a sample be ordered before series production?
Yes. A sample allows the dimensions, fit, finish and function of the basket to be checked before the complete production run begins.
